Founded in 1849

Founded in 1849 as a carpentry business in Altheim, Austria, Wiesner-Hager began to produce seating in 1921. In the following years the product range was extended to include furniture for theatres, cinemas and restaurants as well as private homes. In the middle of the 20th century contract furniture was added to the product portfolio. Through major projects like furnishing the Vienna State Opera House (1955) or the Brucknerhaus in Linz (1974), Wiesner-Hager was able to consolidate its position as market leader in Austria.

Already back in the 1950s Wiesner-Hager won some major export orders and three decades later Wiesner-Hager’s growing international business became an important pillar of the corporate strategy. Finally, in the late 1980s, the decision was taken to refocus business activities on designing and manufacturing office and contract furniture. Today, apart from furnishing offices and buildings, the range of services offered also includes Office Consulting and Interior Design. With an export share of 50%, Wiesner-Hager is among the leading manufacturers in the European furniture industry.

Wiesner-Hager and the environment

Long before scarcity of resources and climate change became widely discussed issues, Wiesner-Hager was fully aware of the need for sustainable product design and environmentally sound manufacturing processes. Since the mid-1980s, environmental issues have been systematically analysed and solved by Wiesner-Hager thanks to our commitment to an active environmental policy.

At Wiesner-Hager, ecopolitical principles are at the heart of our corporate philosophy. The introduction of an environmental management system, compliant firstly with EMAS and later with ISO 14001, was a significant milestone on our road to sustainability. In 2010 Wiesner Hager started to prepare company-wide life cycle assessments according to ISO 14040, and in 2012 they issued the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) according to ISO 14025. These declarations show the environmental impact arising over the life cycle of a product, right down to the last screw. Wiesner-Hager is the first furniture producer worldwide to issue EPDs for all its products and can supply an EPD for any product in any specification at the touch of a button.
