Choosing the desk

An executive desk sets the tone of a private office and has to suit how the room is actually used. Start from the work it supports, whether that is focused individual work, one to one meetings or short reviews with a small group, then decide between a single desk, a desk with a return, or a desk paired with a separate meeting table.

Room and clearance

Measure the room before choosing a size, including the door swing, window positions, radiators and any floor boxes. Leave room behind the desk for a chair to move freely, and room in front for a visitor to pass without turning sideways. If the office also holds a meeting table or a storage run, plan the circulation between them first and size the desk to what is left.

Storage

Separate what needs to be within reach from what can sit against a wall. Pedestals keep everyday items at the desk, while credenzas and cupboards take files, printers and personal belongings out of sight. In an office that is also used for meetings, a single storage run along one wall usually reads more calmly than several separate units.

Finishes

Veneer, laminate, glass, metal and stone all wear differently and read differently under artificial light. Consider how the desk finish sits with the flooring, the joinery and any furniture that is staying, and look at samples in the room itself where that is possible rather than judging them from a photograph.

Power and data

Plan power and data before the desk is ordered. Confirm where the floor boxes or wall outlets are, how cables will reach the desk without crossing a walkway, and whether you need cable management, an access panel or power modules built into the desk top. Adding power to a finished desk is rarely as tidy as specifying it at the start.

Standard and bespoke routes

A standard range may suit a room with conventional proportions. A bespoke desk may be worth considering where the room is an awkward shape, where a particular size or finish is needed, or where the desk has to match existing joinery. Programme

Agree the dates that matter early, including when the space will be ready to receive furniture and when it has to be in use. Lead times vary by range and by finish, so confirm them for the desk you have actually chosen rather than working from a general figure, and allow time for delivery access where a building has lift restrictions or a booked loading bay.

Delivery, installation and aftercare

Standard manufactured furniture typically takes 4 to 8 weeks, while specialist or larger projects typically take 8 to 12 weeks. Bespoke timing depends on the specification and manufacturer. These are typical planning bands rather than availability promises. Installation dates follow agreed supplier production schedules.

Depending on the project, installation may be standard, multi-floor, phased or out of hours and may include relocation, coordination and final handover. Products carry the relevant manufacturer’s commercial warranty. Après remains your main contact and coordinates any remedy with the manufacturer where required.

Coordinated furniture

An executive office rarely stops at the desk. Task seating, visitor chairs, storage and any meeting table are easier to coordinate when they are specified together, so that heights and finishes match and the room reads as one scheme rather than as a collection of separate purchases.

What affects the budget?

The budget depends on the selected range, desk size and format, finish, storage, power and data requirements, delivery access and installation programme. A bespoke route also reflects the design and specification work needed for the room.
