From shoe soles to furniture

Carle Sasse of Lauenau (Casala’s original name) was founded in Lauenau (Lower Saxony) in 1917. The company started as a wooden shoe soles producer but it wasn’t long before it started to produce wooden furniture, and later metal and upholstered furniture.

Established in Culemborg

Today, Casala’s office is located in Culemborg and managed by Daan van der Winkel whom started in the company as a representative in the Netherlands in 1972. In that same year, van der Winkel founded ‘Casala Meubelen Nederland bv’ which would acquire the model rights and components of Casala’s collection later in 2002.

Nevertheless, ‘Casala Meubelen Nederland bv’ preserved the old Casala’s legacy, maintaining most of the German suppliers, preserving the same ergonomic know-how and keeping the same production techniques.

Functionality is user-convenience

Casala is known for contract furniture, furniture to be deployed where design is to prove its functional worth: in congress halls and churches, at offices, universities and government agencies, and in care centres.

For this manufacturer functionality means that user-convenience and design are already incorporated in the first drafts. Stackable and linkable, means of transport, numeration or storage facilities are no coincidences, they are deliberately integrated in the design.
