To world wide designers, Sori Yanagi was an inspiration and icon. Sori died in December, aged 96, leaving us with some great furniture designs.
One of his most loved designs is the Butterfly stool, an iconic piece of bent plywood which he designed back in 1956. Also, he created the Elephant Stool which is one of the most famous post-war Japanese designs because of its clear formal idiom and great functionality.
Both stools are part of the Collection Vitra Design Museum and can be bought through Après.
As Jasper Morrison wrote in his comemorating blog post, “for Yanagi a design needed to be modeled, in the original sense of the word, before it could be drawn up for production.”
